Mexc assigns futures collateral to individual positions or a shared margin pool

· last updated

Mexc cross margin shares eligible futures collateral, while isolated margin assigns collateral to a specific position. Cross-margin losses can consume the shared pool and affect other positions that use it. An isolated position normally risks its assigned margin, including any additions. Auto Margin Addition can draw further funds from the available balance when enabled. Account asset mode also matters: sharing one settlement currency differs from sharing several eligible collateral assets.

A losing position draws on the collateral that its mode makes available

A losing isolated position draws on its assigned margin, whereas a losing cross position can consume eligible collateral beyond its initial allocation. Position margin is the collateral already assigned to the trade. Available margin is the balance that remains available for further commitments. Cross margin brings that eligible available balance into the support pool. Isolated margin keeps additional funds outside the position unless a manual or enabled automatic addition moves them in. Sharing funds can give a position more room before liquidation, while exposing a larger pool to loss.

Separate isolated positions retain separate margin allocations. Liquidating one does not automatically consume another position's assigned collateral. Correlated price movements can still create losses across several isolated positions.

Why can another position move a cross-margin liquidation price?

A cross-margin liquidation price can move because profits, losses, and balance changes alter the shared equity that supports the position. Unrealized profit from another cross position can add support, while unrealized losses reduce it. Funding payments also change available margin. A previously displayed liquidation estimate can therefore change without a new order in the position being watched.

In Single-Asset Margin, the cross-margin equity calculation excludes isolated position margin, isolated unrealized profit or loss, and margin reserved for open orders. Funds committed to those orders are not freely available to absorb losses while the reservation remains in place. The pool has an accounting boundary even when several contracts share it.

Liquidation follows fair price, which can differ from the last traded price. That single-asset calculation triggers liquidation at a displayed margin ratio of 100% or more. This ratio compares required maintenance margin plus liquidation fees with supporting equity. A last-price chart alone therefore does not establish the remaining liquidation buffer.

Leverage sets the initial margin requirement

Higher leverage lowers the initial margin required for an unchanged futures position; it does not determine which collateral can support subsequent losses. For a USDT-margined position, initial margin equals position value divided by selected leverage. Trading fees can add to the opening cost. Risk tiers also constrain permitted leverage and maintenance requirements. In isolated margin, less supporting collateral generally places liquidation closer to entry, with other inputs unchanged.

Auto Margin Addition draws from the available balance

With Auto Margin Addition enabled, an isolated position can draw on available futures funds as it approaches liquidation. The position retains isolated accounting, while each transfer increases the collateral exposed to its losses.

The extra funds increase position margin without increasing the number of contracts held.

Stage Effect on collateral Condition that limits support
Approach the liquidation level The enabled feature detects an isolated position approaching liquidation. The feature operates only in isolated margin.
Release reserved funds The system cancels unfilled opening orders associated with the position. Cancellation releases only the funds reserved by those orders.
Add position margin Available account margin transfers into the position. The transfer requires sufficient available funds.
Recalculate the liquidation price Added collateral increases the liquidation buffer. Continuing adverse movement can still trigger liquidation.
Automatic additions widen the buffer by exposing additional eligible funds to the position's losses.

Canceling an opening order also prevents its unfilled portion from opening or increasing a position. Its reserved collateral can become available for the position at risk, so automatic margin support can change other planned entries.

Each automatic addition matches the required maintenance margin for the position.

Repeated additions can deplete the available futures balance if adverse movement continues. Once eligible funds run out, the feature cannot provide further margin support.

Which assets belong to the cross-margin pool?

In Single-Asset Margin, cross positions that settle in the same currency share the corresponding eligible margin. That scope excludes unrelated balances elsewhere in the exchange account. Initial position allocations sit alongside the available settlement-asset balance. The funds exposed can therefore exceed the amount recorded when one position opened.

Multi-Asset Margin combines supported collateral assets into a shared pool using their effective collateral values. Multi-Asset Margin supports cross margin only. Single-Asset Margin supports both cross and isolated choices. Switching the asset mode can therefore remove the isolated option altogether. Coin-M futures do not support Multi-Asset Margin.

Eligible non-stablecoin assets have tiered collateral rates and maximum collateral limits. Amounts above the applicable cap do not count as effective margin. A token's displayed market value can consequently exceed its usable collateral value. Falling collateral prices can also weaken support for an unchanged futures position, alongside losses on the contract itself.

Can a bulk margin-mode change alter existing positions?

A bulk margin-mode change skips contracts with existing positions or open orders. That setting does not retroactively isolate a cross position or expand an isolated position's collateral. Position-level changes use separate controls and restrictions. An existing isolated position can move to cross margin, while an existing cross position cannot switch directly to isolated margin. Settings for future entries and the funding scope of current exposure therefore require separate attention.

Ordinary stops can leave a position open near liquidation

Ordinary stop-loss orders have trigger and execution conditions separate from the margin mode. A stop that uses the last price can remain inactive while fair price reaches the liquidation threshold. Triggered limit orders can remain unfilled, and market-based exits can execute away from the trigger price. A closing order reduces exposure only to the extent that it actually fills.

Price Protection adds another restriction for qualifying trigger orders. When enabled, it can prevent execution if the difference between last price and fair price exceeds the applicable threshold. Enabling the setting does not update orders created before activation. A filter that blocks an exit can leave exposure open as the margin buffer deteriorates. Neither margin mode guarantees an ordinary stop's execution before liquidation.

Mexc FAQ

Can I use isolated margin for one direction and cross margin for the other?

Advanced Mode allows different leverage and margin modes for long and short directions. Simple Mode uses the same settings for both. Holding long and short positions concurrently also requires Hedge Mode; One-Way Mode allows one direction per futures contract. Account asset mode can further restrict the available margin choices.

Does changing margin mode alter the profit on an unchanged futures position?

Margin mode does not change the price-based profit or loss of an otherwise unchanged position. Position size and price movement determine that amount. The mode changes collateral support and liquidation exposure. Net realized results also include trading and funding fees, which remain separate cost inputs.

Where can I turn Auto Margin Addition on or off?

The Auto Margin Addition toggle appears in the Positions section of the futures interface on both web and app. It applies to isolated margin positions. The enabled state determines whether available margin can move automatically into that position near liquidation, so the isolated label alone does not establish its funding boundary.

When can I switch between Single-Asset Margin and Multi-Asset Margin?

You cannot switch account asset modes while open positions, active orders, or outstanding liabilities remain. This restriction differs from selecting cross or isolated margin for a contract. Multi-Asset Margin also requires eligible collateral and supported futures products; its shared pool supports cross margin only.

Why can a liquidation record show a different price from the trigger?

A liquidation record can show the takeover price, also called the bankruptcy price, which differs from the liquidation trigger. Fair price activates liquidation, and the engine may take over the remaining position at the bankruptcy price. That takeover price may not appear on the trading chart because the bankruptcy takeover bypasses ordinary order-book matching.

How many automatic margin additions can an isolated position receive?

The Auto Margin Addition FAQ dated September 29, 2026 specifies a limit of 100 additions for an isolated position. Each addition matches the position's required maintenance margin. Available funds limit transfers, and the position is liquidated if it still fails to meet the required margin level after 100 additions.
